Transfers from Heraklion airport to Plakias

By public bus from Heraklion to Plakias

The flight to Crete was hopefully pleasant and the landing in Heraklion gentle, now the journey to Plakias continues comfortably and cheaply with the state bus company KTEL. The air-conditioned and mostly modern coaches drive often and regularly and are very punctual according to traffic situation and time of day. Depending on the time of year, the bus timetable is adapted to suit requirements.

Step 1

Take a taxi from Heraklion airport to Heraklion bus station.

After you leave the arrivals hall, you are standing in front of the airport. You can reach the taxi stop by walking a few steps to the left. The sign “TAXI” and the waiting drivers with their cars cannot be missed.

When you enter the waiting area, a driver will (usually) greet you and load your luggage.

After boarding, tell the driver that you want to go to the bus station.

The price for the journey is 12 Euro, the journey time is about 10 minutes.

Many taxi drivers understand German or English. With “Bus Station” or “Bus to Rethymno” you will certainly be understood.

Share a taxi with other travelers to save some money. Most individual travellers also want to go to the bus station in Heraklion.

Step 2

Take the KTEL bus from Heraklion bus station to Rethymno bus station.

At the bus station you can buy a ticket to Rethymno.
You can see the departure time and bus number on the screens.

About 15 minutes before departure luggage is loaded and the passengers are left on board after the ticket check.

Please do not bring open drinks (Frappé) or ice cream into the bus!
Keep your ticket ready during the entire journey. Checkers get on the bus regularly.

The price for the trip Heraklion-Rethymno is 8,30 Euro. The journey takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes – depending on the traffic in Heraklion.

If you have missed the bus and you need the connection in Rethymno, you can still make it by taxi depending on the length of the delay. The taxi takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes, the fare is about 70,- Euro. Up to Plakias a taxi costs about 115,- Euro.

Alternatively you can afford a nice accommodation for one night in Heraklion or Rethymno for the money …

Step 3

By KTEL bus from Rethymno Bus Station to Plakias

Once you have arrived safely in Rethymno, you must now change again.

At the bus station you can buy a ticket to Plakias at the ticket counter.

About 15 minutes before the departure of the bus the corresponding bus with its number and destination is announced by loudspeaker. Unfortunately, this is not always easy to understand and, depending on the time of day, there is some unrest among the waiting tourists who are standing between the fidgety school children at the bus station at noon.

If you have found the bus and it is really the right one, you have to load your luggage here yourself. Then you have to check and validate your ticket at the rear entrance of the bus.

As soon as you sit comfortably in the bus, it’s time to lean back and enjoy the ride!

The price for the trip Rethymno-Plakias is 5,- Euro. The ride takes about 60 minutes.

If you missed the last bus to Plakias, you can take a taxi to Plakias. The taxi takes about 40 minutes, the fare is about 40,- Euro.

Or you invest this money in a hotel room and stay for one night in Rethymno …
