Spili

Spili is located about 21 kilometres northeast of Plakias in the centre of Crete at an altitude of 430 metres. With about 800 inhabitants the place is rather small, but because of its long and varied history it is a popular place for excursions.

A central point is the fountain on the village square. Here water flows directly from the springs at Psilorits from stone lion heads. The water is of such good quality that not only travellers can refresh themselves quickly at it, but also locals can fill the fresh water into bottles.

Many shops offer souvenirs and traditional textiles, from beautifully designed to not so original. Apart from this phenomenon, which is not uncommon in Crete, Spili has its own charm. I am there every Plakias holiday for one or two Frappé in the old Kafenion and can relax wonderfully. Alternatively, you can simply do nothing in one of the cafes next to the Lion’s Head Fountain with coffee, ice cream or lemonade.

Maravel Shop and Garden

The Maravel Shop and Maravel Garden are definitely worth a visit. The shop has an impressive range of soaps, scented and massage oils, healing creams, spices, raki and more. Everything with the highest standards of quality and ecology. In the large garden, visitors can discover over 80 different scented and medicinal herbs.
